Mixtape of the Week: The Weeknd

download: The Weeknd - Echoes of Silence

You know we’re in a strange time in music when we can discuss the mixtape of the week rather than the album of the week. But, currently, this is the state of music we live in and I, for one, am a fan of these new marketing techniques. We can all agree that less is not more when it comes to music. Anyhoo, there were a handful of artists that cranked out mixtapes this past week, and amongst them a T.I mixtape that can be downloaded here and a Kool AD (Victor Vazquez from Das Racist) mixtape that can be downloaded here.   Of all these mixtapes, the Weeknd’s mixtape, Echoes of Silence, takes the honor of mixtape of the week. With the release of his first mixtape, House of Balloons, he began as a complete mystery, soon developing into “some Canadian guy that Drake endorses”, and ultimately transforming into one of the most talked about emerging artists on the scene. Mind you, this was all pre-Lana-Del-Rey buzz, demonstrating that you don’t have to don a pretty face in order to gain pre-debut-album fame. But the stir the Weeknd has caused is warranted. House of Balloons was stellar. Unfortunately, none of his subsequent releases have touched House of Balloons’ amazing status, which either remains untouchable for its novelty or for the fact that no song has since rivaled Glass Table Girls, High For This, or Wicked Games. That being said, Echoes of Silence doesn’t stray too far with its effortless, yet eery-in-its-accuracy, cover of  MJ’s Dirty Diana  as well as other tracks dripping with his signature mournful melodies and distorted synths. If you have yet to download the final installment of the Weeknd’s mixtape trilogy, you should probably get on that. You wouldn’t want to miss the reveal of whether Frodo ever succeeds in destroying the ring & returning to the Shire.

In an era where mixtapes are putting people on the map, A$AP Rocky can be singled out as one of the most buzzed about new artists for his recent LiveLoveA$AP mixtape. I have yet to form a real opinion on him (after Ke$ha, I vowed to never support anyone with dollar sign used to stylize their name), but I’ve been really enjoying his single “Peso” and some of the remixes of it that have since emerged. This one’s my fave thus far…
