Nick Waterhouse & the Tarots at the Li Po Lounge March 14, 2011
A friend introduced me to this performance over the weekend and I was blown away. If you’ve never been to Lipo Lounge in San Francisco’s Chinatown, it’s quite the gem with its straight-out-of-the-50s look and decor, its Chinese Mai Tai’s that have caught the attention of the likes of Anthony Bourdain, and its popularity for its Sunday Sweater Funk night. Being familiar with the spot and then imagining Waterhouse performing here makes this performance that much more epic. The black-and-white grainy filming also helps. Enjoy.

Lee Fields - Faithful Man (Yours Truly Session recorded at SXSW 2012)
It’s rare you get to hear genuine soul music these days. But thanks to the mini-soul revival that’s been happening these past few years (not hating, I love it), artists that have been around since the 60’s, like Fields, are given the chance to record new albums (though I must admit, I like the idea of a new Womack album, buuut in his first single he doesn’t sound so hot). In Fields’ case, he was able to start a new chapter of his career. And this Yours Truly rendition of “Faithful Man” makes me incredibly appreciative of his efforts. The sound quality is incredible and this is just all-around amazing.

In accordance with a lazy Monday dedicated to music, I gotta say: It pains me to discuss the Lana Del Rey SNL performance & her pee-pee dance. So I will refrain from tearing her a new one. Still rooting for you, Lana. Just step your game up.
Grimes - Genesis (Yours Truly Session)
I’ve previously posted this new song from Grimes’ upcoming album Visions (release date 2/21) right here. It’s really really good. No joke. Really really. But watch this video of her performing the song live. Then tell me she’s not an impressive talent. I dare you.

Lana Del Rey - Video Games (live at Corinthia Hotel)
Up ‘til now, all the youtube videos (and brutal pitchfork reviews) of Lana Del Rey performing live have done nothing more than make me not want to see it for myself for fear of it ruining Lana for me forever. But this video of her performing ’Video Games’ live at Corinthia Hotel London does the exact opposite. Her voice sounds sublime.

Alabama Shakes - You Ain’t Alone (live in Austin)
Keep an eye out for this band in 2012. Whatever the genre is (“rock ‘n’ roll church” is my fave description so far), they are damn good. Alabama represent!
